RECONEXION PEDREGAL: residual spaces as connectors

The area is a distillate of megalopolis critical issues such as deconstructed urban fabrics, physical barriers like walls and height differences, high level of traffic pollution, “barrier streets” and lack of public spaces. The latter are of low quality and difficult to access. Furthermore, most of them have exotic characteristics and don’t conserve the original landscape. The remainings of the important ecological niche are enclosed in not accessible reserves and in the few, not designed green areas.

In a few years 70% of the Pedregal eco system has been destroyed by hyper urbanization

investigate the transformation of infrastructural residual spaces into structural ones

The objective of the project is to investigate the transformation of infrastructural green spaces into structural ones focusing on the currently untapped network of traffic islands. The new system is based on three lines of action:

Reinforce the ecological system through good use of existing heritage and with the creation of biodiversity corridors connecting landscape fragments.

Reconfigure the public spaces system by making the existing ones more accessible and attractive and creating new proximity parks in the larger traffic islands

Promote a sustainable mobility system through the creation of a new cycle and pedestrian green infrastructure and the promotion of a low emission public transport system.

The systemization of Barragan approaches to the lava field in “Jardines del Pedregal” is the base of the design of the microarchitectures which articulate the promenade.

The path is designed following elevation contours in order maximize the accessibility. Sustainable mobility brings a fundamental health improvement by diminishing emissions and increasing physical exercise.

Pedregal landscape sequences

The traffic islands are cleaned up from waste, pruning, and underbrush residues in order to allow spontaneous regrowth of the local flora and to unveil rock outcrops, peculiar scenic elements of Pedregal land.

cuidalo, es tuyo!

The goal  is to sensitize citizens, making them aware that safeguard of the environment starts from everyday actions. Flora and fauna are safeguarded and approached by the population.
